Francis, Mr., portrait photograph

Archive record

About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed a man identified only as Mr. Francis in 1915. By that year, Genthe had relocated from San Francisco to New York, where he maintained a portrait studio.
The glass negative captures a studio portrait made during the middle portion of Genthe's four-decade career. Working in the soft-focus pictorialist style, Genthe produced thousands of such portraits alongside his better-known work in other subjects.
The photograph survives as part of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Nothing further is recorded about the sitter's identity or the circumstances of the sitting.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
