About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mrs. Fekele in 1919, producing this portrait negative on nitrate film. The five-by-seven-inch negative reflects the pictorialist approach that characterized Genthe's studio work throughout his career.
Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other work.
The record provides no further information about Mrs. Fekele or the circumstances of the sitting.
