About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mrs. Fekele in his studio in 1919. The original negative, made on nitrate film stock, measured five by seven inches.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued to work into the 1940s.
This portrait is part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items acquired by the Library of Congress from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other photographic work from his four-decade career.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
