1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified woman identified only as Miss Martin in 1921. By that year, Genthe had relocated his portrait practice to New York, having previously maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911.

The negative is part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Working in the soft-focus pictorialist style, Genthe built his archive over four decades. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his other photographic work.

The subject's first name and other details about her remain unknown. The original 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative survives in the Library's holdings.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
