1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

This 1921 portrait depicts an unidentified woman known only as Miss Martin. Arnold Genthe made the photograph as a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated from San Francisco in 1911. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record provides no further details about the sitter's first name, occupation, or the circumstances of the sitting. As with many studio portraits of the era, only the surname and a courtesy title survive in Genthe's records.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
