1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Mrs. Matson in his studio in 1919. The portrait survives as a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative now held by the Library of Congress.

Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, then relocated to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record provides no further information about Mrs. Matson's identity, occupation, or her reason for commissioning the portrait. Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his four-decade career, producing several thousand studio portraits alongside other photographic work.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
