About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed this portrait in 1921, working from his New York studio. The negative survives as a 5 x 7 inch nitrate original.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s.
The Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. This portrait forms part of that collection, which consists largely of studio portraits alongside extensive documentation of other subjects.
The record identifies the sitter only as Schattenstein. No further details about the subject or the circumstances of the sitting are given.
