1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

This nitrate negative from January 1921 shows a portrait made by Arnold Genthe. The photograph depicts someone with the surname Schattenstein, though no further identifying details appear in the record.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a New York studio during this period, having relocated from San Francisco about a decade earlier. The negative was part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.

The 5 x 7 inch format was standard for studio portraiture of the era. Nitrate negatives from this period require careful preservation due to the chemical instability of the film base.
