1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed this portrait on a nitrate negative measuring 5 by 7 inches. The subject is identified in the archive as Lubovska.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, then moved to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other bodies of work. By 1920, when this negative was made, Genthe had been working in New York for nearly a decade.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
