About this photograph
This glass plate negative from Arnold Genthe's studio preserves a portrait of a man identified only as Mr. Tapp. The photograph was made in 1914, three years after Genthe had moved his practice from San Francisco to New York.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits like this one.
The record provides no further information about the sitter's identity, occupation, or what brought him to Genthe's studio for this sitting. The original 5 by 7 inch negative remains part of the archive's holdings.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
